What happens if you break it

  • Carrying on banking business without a licence

    §46(4)

    Fine up to ₹1 crore; continuing offence — additional ₹1 lakh per day.

  • False statement in returns / balance sheet

    §46(1)

    Imprisonment up to 3 years + fine.

  • Default in maintaining cash reserve / SLR

    §42 (RBI Act) / §24

    Penal interest above bank rate on the shortfall; persistent default — additional penalty.

  • Non-compliance with RBI directions

    §47A

    Fine up to ₹1 crore; continuing — ₹1 lakh per day.
